The Mechanics & Materials Lab

The Mechanics & Materials Lab in the CLA/LEE buildings on ETH Zürich's city center campus.

The Mechanics & Materials Lab was founded in April 2017, when Professor Kochmann moved from the California Institute of Technology to ETH Zürich. Home in the LEE and CLA buildings only a stone-throw away from Zürich's main train station, we are an interdisciplinary research group interested in the mechanics and physics of materials and structures (and all shades of gray in between). Our international team of doctoral students, postdocs, scientists and technicians investigates why materials behave the way they do and how we can design novel man-made architected, materials with tailored, unusual or extreme properties and functionality. Supported by many undergraduate and graduate students, we use theoretical, numerical and experimental techniques to describe, understand and optimize the multiscale nature of (meta-)materials and their resulting performance, which includes metals, ceramics, composites, as well as periodic and non-periodic structural architected solids or metamaterials. For those investigations, we also develop new computational codes (many of which we release as open source) as well as new experimental techniques.

Thank you for visiting our website! We hope you enjoy reading more about our research, our team, our teaching, and our research facilities.
