Bachelor Studies

At the Bachelor level, we offer the following courses:

Mechanics III: Dynamics

This is a Bachelor class, mandatory to all undergraduate students in Mechanical and Civil Engineering, which discusses the fundamental concepts of engineering dynamics. Starting with the dynamics of a single particle, we advance to systems of particles and, ultimately, to rigid bodies in 3D space. We discuss their motion (kinematics) and the relation between their motion and the forces and moments that cause the motion (kinetics). We also introduce energy principles and vibrations of a single and multiple degrees of freedom. Finally, we provide an introduction to the dynamics of deformable bodies (covering elastic waves and free vibrations of rods and beams). More about Mechanics III: Dynamics

Introduction to Finite Element Analysis

This course (formerly "Computational Mechanics 1: Intro to FEA") is a general elective for Mechanical Engineering Bachelor students in the 6th semester as well as an elective for Master students of Mechanical Engineering and other departments. It offers an introduction to finite element analysis with a focus on the theory behind finite elements and its implementation for engineering problems. Rather than studying specific software, we treat the fundamentals and implement our own finite element code in MATLAB through the course in a series of computational projects that build upon one another. Swissloop Focus Project

In the Mechanical Engineering focus projects, students develop and build a product from beginning to end. They work in a team and independently learn to structure problems and identify solutions, carry out system analysis and simulations, fabricate prototypes, and present and document their work. Swissloop is a research initiative promoting the advancement of the hyperloop technology and its application in the real world. The team designs and builds operational prototypes of pods which compete in the International Hyperloop Pod Competition. This focus project gathers a team of eight Mechanical Engineering students to work on the design of the new hyperloop pod. More about Swissloop Focus Project

Labs (Laborpraktika)

Labs (Laborpraktika) aim at understanding measurement techniques, the use of measurement devices and tools, the preparation and execution of experiments as well as the documentation, presentation and interpretation of results. Mechanical Engineering students in their fifth semester carry out a number of labs offered form the various groups in the department. Due to the covid-19 situation, we offer a few labs that can be completed at home. More about Labs

Bachelor thesis

We offer theoretical, numerical and experimental research projects that can be completed, among others, within the scope of a Bachelor thesis. More about research projects
